E-TRIAGE

Electronic Emergency Department Triage Tool

What is E-Triage

An electronic health record (EHR) embedded tool to support triage decisions in the emergency department (ED). The tool uses routinely available data at triage to stratify patients to optimal service lines based on the risk of hospitalization or critical care needs.

How E-Triage Works

E-triage leverages machine learning technology to issue triage level recommendations based on patients’ risk of in-hospital mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, emergent surgery and inpatient hospitalization in tandem. Risk predictions are generated from patient demographics, complaint, vital sign, and active medical history data routinely available in the EHR at triage. E-triage is used to drive aggregate reductions in ED length-of-stay by enabling: (1) increases in fast-track service streams to facilitate timely management of all patients and (2) accelerate care transition to critical care resources. The E-triage tool is easily customizable to hospitals’ unique patient populations, practice patterns, and organizational objectives.

The Value of E-Triage

  • Improve ED patient flow metrics

  • Variable cost savings due to decreased resource utilization per patient

  • Improved patient experience due to decreased ED wait time and over-processing

  • Higher level of employee engagement and satisfaction resulting from more proactive operations

  • Reduced untoward variability at triage

EVIDENCE

  • Reduce Emergency Department wait-time, door-to-decision, and practice variation

  • Proven to decrease aggregate wait time and LWBS

  • Improved early detection of high-acuity and low-acuity patients at triage in comparison to the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) reference standard

  • Successfully operationalized at Johns Hopkins Health System Emergency Departments
